Verbena is a common flowering plant that is mostly grown as an annual and adds grace to the garden throughout the growing season. The plant produces clusters of pink, red and blue-violet flowers. The flowers bloom from seed in a few months but require a little extra care. Verbera can be grown in containers, hanging baskets, home gardens or terrace gardens.

When To Plant Verbena
You can sow verbena seeds any time of the year because they need warm weather to thrive. Sow the seeds from spring to winter, once temperatures warm.

How To Grow Verbena From Seeds
Sow verbena seeds directly in pots or start them in seedling trays and then transplant them. The optimum soil temperature for verbena seed germination is 21-27°C. Choose a pot or grow bag at least 22 cm wide and deep for planting verbena.

Verbena Mix Seeds Sowing Method
• Take a seedling tray, fill it with potting soil mix and spread verbena seeds in the potting soil. Water the potting mix gently through a watering can. Keep the seedling tray in a dark place out of direct sunlight. Verbena seeds take 14-21 days to germinate.
• Transplant verbena seedlings to an individual pot when seedlings are a few cm tall. For healthy growth of the plant, plant only 1-2 seedlings in a 9-inch pot. But don’t forget to harden off the seedling before transplanting.

Fertilizer For Verbena
During its growing season, verbena needs regular doses of a water-soluble fertilizer such as vermicompost, cow manure or neem cake.

Verbena Flower Plant Care Tips
Soil : Verbena can grow in any type of soil except heavy clay but the soil must be well-drained.
Water : Verbena is a slightly drought-tolerant plant but needs constant moisture in the soil until established, and weekly watering thereafter.
Sunlight : It needs maximum hours of sunlight daily to flourish, for which at least 6-8 hours are good.
Temperature : Verbena can grow in almost all climates except extremely hot climates. Temperatures between 10-32°C are optimal for verbena growth.
Common pests and diseases : Spider mites or other pests disturb verbena's growth, which can be controlled by spraying neem oil, but powdery mildew disease infects the plant mainly due to overhead watering.

Verbena Flowering Time
Typically, verbena blooms all season from spring to fall or winter. It takes only 80-90 days to reach maturity.
