I remember the first time I saw these plants. At first, I said "How cute" but then I touched the leaves and I was awestruck! The String of Turtles plant looks exactly as its common name describes. A string... of turtles. Their succulent leaves have an almost translucent layered look, with turtle shell-like patterns underneath. I can't help from slightly pinching the leaves whenever I get a chance, they're just so juicy! These peperomia don't need to be repotted frequently as they have quite shallow root systems. You would want to be careful about potting them in too large a pot as this can cause the soil to stay too damp.
Maintenance
In its natural habitat, this plant is often shaded by taller plants/trees. Therefore, medium to bright indirect light is best. Direct light is too intense, and can cause burning and fading of leaves. This plant can also grow under fluorescent lighting, and is fine for the office. The String of Turtles is susceptible to overwatering, due to its delicate root system. It is better to err on the side of caution. Like many succulent-type plants, water your Peperomia prostrata sparingly, especially in the winter. I usually wait for the soil to dry out between waterings. In the summer, the plant can withstand a bit more water. Note: Be sure not to let the plant sit in pooled water as that is a surefire way to root rot.
Pet Note
Pet lovers will be happy to know that these plants are non-toxic. But please don't let cute little Whiskey nibble these beautiful leaves!
