Mango ginger is a plant of the ginger family Zingiberaceae and is closely related to turmeric (Curcuma longa). The rhizomes are very similar to common ginger but lack its pungency and instead have a raw mango flavour. They are used in making pickles in south India and chutneys in north India.

Benefits
Ayurveda and Unani medicinal systems have given much importance to mango ginger as an appetizer, alexteric, antipyretic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, emollient, expectorant and laxative and to cure biliousness, itching, skin diseases, bronchitis, asthma, hiccough and inflammation due to injuries.

Growing
The crop grows well with supplementation of organic inputs such as farmyard manure and could be grown as a rainfed crop. Two to three weedings and earthing up (covering of exposed rhizomes with soil) are the only management practices required for the crop. Rhizomes are ready for harvest when all the leaves dry up.

Germination
It grows up to 2feet. The rhizomes are of mild yellow colour.

Harvest
Mango ginger will be ready for harvest in 6 months. Like ginger, the stem slowly wilts. Using a spade, the rhizomes can be dug up carefully without cutting into them.

Watering
Ginger is cultivated as rain fed crop in high rainfall areas (uniform distribution for 5 to 7 months) and irrigated crop in less rainfall areas where distribution is not uniform. Ginger requires 1300-1500 mm of water during its crop cycle.

Soil
Mango ginger is found growing on variety of soils including marginal lands. Selected soil should be porous with good drainage.

What temperature does a mango ginger like?
