Borage is a hardy annual flowering herb that is very popular in the world. Borage is grown for its pure blue color, five-petaled, star-shaped flower and young leaves with a cucumber-like flavor. Borage blooms throughout the summer and is good for attracting pollinators (bees and butterflies) and is perfect for garnishing as well as adding flavor to salads and cold drinks. The young leaves are ideal for use in salads, soups and other dishes, and the stems of borage are also edible. Borage is a low-maintenance flowering herb plant, so you can easily grow it with simple tips.

Borage Growing Season In India
Borage grows well in regions with mild, cool or temperate climates. It thrives in temperatures between 15°C to 24°C. It can be grown during both the winter (September to November) and summer seasons (February – March) depending on the local climate.

How To Grow Borage Herb
Borage should be planted directly in its final pot and it is recommended not to transplant it because borage has long deep roots, so it doesn’t do well with the transplant. Select pots or grow bags that are at least 30-38 cm (wide and deep) and have well-draining holes. The ideal temperature for germination of borage seeds is between 20-30°C.

Borage Seeds Sowing Method
Take a pot or grow bag, fill it with a sowing medium and then sow the borage seeds about 1-1.5 cm deep in the soil and 5-8 cm apart from each seed. Water deeply, keep the soil moist and place the pot in a sunny place indoors or outdoors. Borage seeds germinate for about 7-10 days (depending on growing conditions). When the plant is 12 cm tall, thin the borage plant to about 30-45 cm.

Fertilizer For Borage Herb Plant
Borage is a low-maintenance herb plant, so it doesn’t require fertilizer, but if you plan for fertilizer then you can use a diluted solution of a water-soluble fertilizer (tea compost or fish emulsion).

Borage Plants Care Tips
Soil : Use rich, well-drained soil for planting borage; however, it can also grow well in nutrient-poor and dry soil.
Water : Borage plants require moderate watering during their growing season, keep the soil moist, and avoid waterlogging in the soil.
Sunlight : Borage plant needs full sunlight but it can also grow well in partial shade.
Temperature : The minimum growing temperature for the borage plant is 10°C and the maximum temperature is 35°C.
Common pests and diseases : Some pests like caterpillars, painted lady butterflies, and flea beetles eat the borage plant’s leaves. The borage plant is infected by mildew diseases; To get rid of this problem, it would be right to spray neem oil on the borage plant from time to time, also you can use sticky traps near the borage plants.

How To Harvest Borage
• Borage plants are ready for harvesting within 1-2 months from planting; however, you can cut the leaves and flowers as needed.
• Cut the borage flower when they have just fully opened and leaves should be harvested when they are young and used in salads, soups and other dishes.
